Platinum or gold? Choosing the metal for a ring you'll never take off

The metal question comes up in nearly every consultation, usually framed as which is better? Neither. They age differently, and the right answer depends on which kind of ageing you'll enjoy living with.

How each metal ages

• Platinum doesn't wear away — it displaces. Scratches push metal sideways, building a soft grey patina.
• 18ct gold slowly loses material to wear. A band worn daily for decades will eventually need rebuilding.
• White gold is yellow gold bleached with alloy and usually rhodium-plated; the plating is a maintenance commitment.

The honest cost comparison

Platinum's premium is smaller than most people expect once you compare like-for-like weights. Where gold genuinely wins is resizing and repair — it's simply easier to work at the bench.

Our default advice

For a ring that will be worn every day and rarely serviced: platinum. For jewellery that comes off at night, or where warmth of colour is the point: gold, and enjoy it.
